Install and Upgrade

Before You Begin…

Make sure you do the following before installing Wearable Lanterns:

  • Install SKSE 1.7.3+. SKSE is required. You can download it here or install it through Steam Workshop.
  • Install SkyUI 4.1+. SkyUI is required. (Using SkyUI Away is OK.)
  • Optional: Install Dragonborn. If you want to use Paper Lanterns, the Dragonborn DLC is required. Dragonborn is an optional requirement and Wearable Lanterns will still work without it.
  • Delete old script files. If you had Wearable Lanterns 3.x or older installed at any point in the past, you must delete all existing loose script files you may have left in your installation. This should be taken care of for you by your mod manager; if you installed it manually, remove all script files that begin with _WL. Script files use the file extension in .psc and .pex and are found in Skyrim/Data/Scripts and Skyrim/Data/Scripts/Source.
  • Do not unpack Wearable Lantern’s BSA archive once you’ve downloaded the mod. Uncompressing the archive into loose files leaves you open to upgrade issues down the road. Loose files are always loaded instead of their BSA archive equivalents, which may mean that you don’t get the latest files when you upgrade and could cause certain functions of the mod to break. Only uncompress the BSA archive into loose files if you are a mod developer and you know exactly what you are doing. You have been warned.

Installing

  • Simply download, install, and activate the mod using the mod manager of your choice.
    • (You may receive a warning from your mod manager that certain shared components, such as StorageUtil.dll, JsonUtil, etc, will be overwritten from other mods. This is fine; accept the overwrite. Wearable Lanterns 4 includes portions of PapyrusUtil 3.2 and my common meter component files which are used in many of my mods, which are up to date as of this writing.)

Upgrading

Important Upgrade Info
  • Upgrading from 3.0b is the only supported legacy upgrade path. For all other versions, you will probably need to start a new game.
  • Starting a new game will always result in a cleaner, more straight-forward installation experience.
  • Every person’s game is different; your mileage may vary. You might have to start a new game anyway.
Upgrade Procedure – Direct Upgrade Method

This procedure is the simplest one, but may cause issues for some users. If you experience problems after following this procedure, try the Clean Save method, below.

  1. Back up your save games! Do not skip this step!
  2. Unequip all worn lanterns from yourself and followers.
  3. Go into an interior cell (house, inn, etc).
  4. Save your game. Exit the game.
  5. Download and install Wearable Lanterns 4 using a mod manager.
    1. (You may receive a warning from your mod manager that certain shared components, such as StorageUtil.dll, JsonUtil, etc, will be overwritten from other mods. This is fine; accept the overwrite. Wearable Lanterns 4 includes portions of PapyrusUtil 3.2 and my common meter component files which are used in many of my mods, which are up to date as of this writing.)
  6. Deactivate Wearable Lanterns 3.0b in your mod manager.
  7. Activate Wearable Lanterns 4 in your mod manager.
  8. Start the game and load the save you previously made. Your lanterns should function and the MCM should be updated. (If you have Papyrus logging enabled, you will receive a wide ranging number of errors in your log file. These are expected and are an artifact of the upgrade procedure. They will (mostly) only appear once and can be ignored.)
Upgrade Procedure – Clean Save Method

This upgrade procedure might work for some users that experience problems after attempting the previous upgrade. Following this procedure will mean you will lose all of your lanterns, but it’s the best option when everything else fails but you don’t want to start a new game.

  1. Back up your save games! Do not skip this step!
  2. Unequip all worn lanterns from yourself and followers.
  3. Go into an interior cell (house, inn, etc).
  4. Save your game. Exit the game.
  5. Disable Wearable Lanterns from your load order using your mod manager.
  6. Start the game.
  7. Save your game again. Exit the game. Your save game has now been saved without Wearable Lanterns present.
  9. Activate Wearable Lanterns 4 in your mod manager.
  10. Start the game and load the save you previously made. Acquire a lantern and check that it works. (If you have Papyrus logging enabled, you will receive a wide ranging number of errors in your log file. These are expected and are an artifact of the upgrade procedure. They will (mostly) only appear once and can be ignored.)

If at this point the mod still doesn’t function correctly, you will require starting a new game.
