Troubleshooting

Known Issues – Being Looked Into

  • If an armor mod is loaded in your load order in position 128 or higher, the mod’s armor will not be recognized properly by Frostfall. I am actively fixing this issue.
  • The Warmth and Coverage values on the bottom bar display improperly on 4:3 monitor resolutions.
  • The game may crash when opening the Smithing crafting menu when using the SkyUI 5.1 Add-On, especially when using mods that add many recipes to the Smithing crafting system (Immersive Armors, etc).
  • PLEASE use Crash Fixes version 11 or newer before reporting a bug related to CTDs. Crash Fixes may resolve your problem. Also check to make sure your mods are up to date and that your load order follows the recommendations of the authors of the mods that you use.

Common Issues

Tents don’t have any collision. I can walk through them.
  • This is by design. This is so that NPCs and followers will not become stuck on them when walking. Trust me, this is far more favorable than many characters throughout the game world getting stuck on your camping supplies.
My armor from mods appear to not apply Warmth and Coverage (or the wrong Warmth and Coverage) to my character.
  • Ensure that Frostfall.esp (the plug-in) is loaded before (higher in the load order) any mods that add armor.
  • PC users with SKSE – Make sure that other mods in your load order that use PapyrusUtil are using PapyrusUtil 3.2 or greater. If not,
    • update these mods, or
    • Position Frostfall (the mod and its files, not the plug-in) after (lower in the load order) so that Frostfall’s version of PapyrusUtil is the one that’s used by the game, or
    • Install PapyrusUtil as a separate mod and position it at the bottom of your load order
I get errors that look like the following in my Papyrus log: Native static function PushInt could find no matching static function on linked type PapyrusUtil. Function will not be bound.
  • Another mod is positioned in your load order after Frostfall (the mod and its files, not the plug-in) and it is using an older version of PapyrusUtil, preventing critical functions from working. See above.
I have “Rescue” enabled, and when succumbing to exposure, I was teleported to a featureless, blank void and became stuck.
  • Ensure that Frostfall.esp is loaded before (higher in the load order) mods that make edits to inns and taverns.
  • If you are using Requiem, in the Requiem MCM, select “Handle Death like in Vanilla” to ensure proper behavior of the Rescue system.
When playing the game using Mod Organizer, some new files appear in my “overwrite” directory. Are they important?
  • These files contain your Frostfall settings. If you delete them, you will also reset all of your Frostfall configuration settings.
  • You can move these files into the “Frostfall” mod directory to avoid Mod Organizer warnings, or, simply leave them in the overwrite directory. You can also create a new “mod” in Mod Organizer’s mods directory named “Configuration Settings” or similar and keep them there.
When using Hunterborn with Frostfall 3, I get a CTD. How can I get Frostfall 3 to work with Hunterborn?
  • During installation, do not select the Frostfall compatibility patch option. If you have already installed Hunterborn, de-select the compatibility patch from your load order.
  • Download the Hunterborn / Campfire compatibility patch. Ensure that it loads after Campfire and Hunterborn.
How do I use the SkyRe / PerMa Survivalism plug-in with Frostfall 3?

You cannot use the SkyRe / PerMa Frostfall plug-in that includes new perks in the Wayfarer perk tree with Frostfall 3.

Frostfall 3’s Endurance skill tree (accessed from any built campfire) includes all of the functionality that was previously included with this plug-in and is no longer tied directly to SkyRe.

Frostfall 3 is compatible with both SkyRe and PerMa themselves.

I updated to Frostfall 3 and I can’t light unlit campfires already in the world.
  • This feature will return in a future version of Frostfall 3.
My armor / cloaks / hoods are not providing the Warmth or Coverage I expect.
  • Open the Frostfall MCM and navigate to “Armor & Clothing”, and select “Set Protection”. You can then choose a description that you feel matches the equipment, or, set the values manually.
Real Shelter no longer works with Frostfall 3.
  • Real Shelter must be updated to support Campfire. When it is, it will begin working again. I have been granted permission to continue Real Shelter development, so as soon as I can get around to implementing this, I will.
Warmth and Coverage does not appear in the Inventory menu.
  • Make sure that you’re using SkyUI 5.1 or newer.
  • Make sure you’ve installed the Frostfall SkyUI 5.1 Add-On.
  • Make sure that the Add-On is loaded after SkyUI in Mod Organizer in the left pane (priority must be higher).
I am using a mod with a patcher program and it states that Frostfall can’t be found.
  • Old patches (for Frostfall 2.6 and below) look for Chesko_Frostfall.esp. Frostfall 3 uses a plug-in named Frostfall.esp. This was intentional because older patches for Frostfall would not work in Frostfall 3.
  • The reason for this is because Frostfall 3 is, essentially, an entirely new mod. Therefore, new patches must be developed for it.
  • Please ask the mod author for the mod in question to update their patcher for Frostfall 3 and Campfire as necessary. The author of Frostfall has no control over this.
  • DO NOT change the name of the Frostfall plug-in to Chesko_Frostfall.esp. This will break the mod. Discontinuing to use the patch utility’s Frostfall function or waiting for an updated patch utility are the only solutions.
I am using a mod with a compatibility patch and my mod manager says that a required master file (Chesko_Frostfall.esp) can’t be found. Now my compatibility patch doesn’t work any more.

I installed Frostfall 3 and now Skyrim crashes on start-up.
  • You are most likely trying to load a compatibility patch for another mod that is for Frostfall 2.6 and older (requires Chesko_Frostfall.esp). You must remove this patch and update to a new one that works with Frostfall 3 and/or Campfire.
  • If one is not available, please ask the mod author for the mod in question to update their compatibility patches for Frostfall 3 and Campfire as necessary. The author of Frostfall has no control over this.
  • DO NOT change the name of the Frostfall plug-in to Chesko_Frostfall.esp. This will break the mod. Discontinuing to use the compatibility patch or waiting for an updated patch are the only solutions.
I can see some of the meters, but not all of them. / The meters appear to be in the wrong place.
  • Navigate to the Frostfall MCM, select “Meters”, and select a Layout Preset.
  • If you are using an aspect ratio that is not 16:9, 16:10, or 4:3, Frostfall might not know where to place your meters. In this case, select the “Show Advanced” option for each meter and configure its position yourself.
General goods vendors don’t appear to sell any camping equipment.

Wait up to 48 in-game hours. They should then appear, if they are intended to sell them.

Certain spells are not available for purchase from the College of Winterhold, even though the spell’s description on this website says that they should sell them.

Wait up to 48-in-game hours. They should then appear, if they are intended to sell them.

Make sure that you meet the skill level requirements. The mages at the College have skill level requirements to sell certain spells (which applies to all spells across the board that they are capable of selling).

I stared up at the stars, but nothing happened.

Start the mod using the SkyUI Mod Configuration Menu instead.

I started playing a hand-warming animation near a fire, and became stuck. I use a controller to play.
  • You must press Ready Weapon, Attack, or Jump to exit the hand warming animation. SKSE cannot currently detect joystick inputs. Keyboard users can simply press a movement key.
My Survival Skills powers disappeared.
  • You configured a hotkey using the SkyUI Mod Config Menu for these powers. The spell powers are removed from your spells menu when a hotkey is configured. Use the hotkey instead. To get the spell powers back for whatever reason, press the button to “Default” the hotkey in the Mod Configuration Menu. The spell should return shortly.
The player handwarming animation does not seem to play when near a fire.
  • Check to make sure that the following is true, or else the animation will not work:
    • You must be cold (greater than 20 exposure).
    • You must be close to the fire or heat source. The animation requires you to sometimes be closer than the distance you are warmed by the fire.
    • You must not be swimming, jumping, or moving.
    • You must wait about 5 seconds.
    • You must not be mounted (horse, dragon, or otherwise).
    • You must have your weapons / spells sheathed.
    • You must be in 3rd person view.
    • You must not be in dialogue with an NPC.
    • You must not be sitting, lying down, crafting, or otherwise playing another animation.
    • You must not have a torch equipped. (A shield is fine.)

If you meet all of the above conditions, the animation should play.

After I installed Frostfall, the weather doesn’t seem to change / the weather behaves in a way I don’t like / my Clear Skies shout doesn’t work like I expect it to.
  • Frostfall does not modify weather, weather patterns, weather frequency, or the behavior of existing shouts. Your issues are originating from some other source, or are simply a matter of perception.
I uninstalled Frostfall, and now my character seems to be permanently afflicted with negative status effects.
  • Frostfall must be uninstalled correctly, or this will happen. Please reinstall your last-used version of Frostfall and follow the steps outlined in the Uninstall page.
  • Following uninstallation steps is your responsibility. The author cannot make this mod any easier to remove.
  • As a general note, understand that Skyrim was never designed for supporting the removal of any mod. Therefore, unintended behavior may result.
  • The uninstall procedure has been tested by the author as satisfactory for removing the mod from the game in a generic game / mod environment. Your environment will be different; therefore, your experience may be different after uninstalling.
I am using a non-English version of Skyrim, and the SkyUI Config Menu for Frostfall has a really terrible translation in my language.
  • Machine translations are provided as a convenience and courtesy for all supported languages, in order to grant non-English speakers the ability to play and enjoy the mod at all. Please seek out (or create) a translated version of the mod in your language for actual support for your native language.
I use a translated copy of Frostfall, and I experience issues.
  • I do not support translated versions of my mods, because I have no control over what the translator changed in the plug-in file.
  • However, I have an open policy towards translations. Anyone is free to translate and re-upload a translated version of the plug-in and MCM translation files (but not the entire mod).
I use Script Dragon, and I experience bugs when using Frostfall.
  • Script Dragon is an old and unsupported script extender for Skyrim. You will have problems. Do not use it. I do not support it.
I pirated the game / use a no-Steam patch for Skyrim, and I experience bugs when using Frostfall.
  • I cannot support an environment where I do not have guarantees over which executable of the game you are using. The only version of Skyrim I support is 1.9.32.0.8 on a legal copy of Skyrim executed through Steam.
